Spend a day in Yorkshire photographing the spectacular bird life of Malhamdale. Capture wild peregrines at Malham Cove and photograph the relaxing wildlife at Gordale.
Photographing wild birds is an exciting challenge: this photography workshop concentrates on truly wild birds in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Peregrine falcons nest on Malham Cove each year and will be our main photographic subject. During the breeding season the parent birds can be watched as they fly above the nest site and bring in food. Peregrines are protected at the nest by law: here we are able to watch from a public footpath without causing any disturbance. This workshop is limited to just three people.
We start early in the morning to make the most of the the light. The birds often come incredibly close in flight and we will be situated at the same level as the nest site; this provides incredible photo opportunities as the falcons stoop towards the valley then quickly rise above the cove. Tuition will be given on flight photography and exposure settings to make the most of these fast moving subjects! Other species which can be photographed on top of the cove include wheatear which regularly perch on the limestone rocks. Our morning's photography will be followed by a classic and hearty Yorkshire breakfast at the Old Barn Cafe in Malham, where we can review and discuss our images.
During the afternoon we will visit Gordale, an excellent location for dippers and wagtails which can be found along the beck. Dippers are quite confiding at this location as are the pied wagtails. This is also a good location to watch swallows and house martins collecting mud to build their nests. At Janets Foss, the woodlands are also home to a range of birds including redstart and spotted flycatcher. If time allows, we will return to the top of Malham Cove for more peregrine photography. |
