WILD WATER VOLES

NATURAL HABITATS

WATCH WILD MAMMAL BEHAVIOUR

* * April 2012: These workshops have been cancelled until further notice * *

Unfortunately, this particular water vole colony appears to have disappeared this season. There are a number of possible reasons, including mink in the area. As the water voles do not appear to be present, all water vole workshops are cancelled for the forseeable future. Any updates on theses workshops will be added to this page.

Photograph wild Water Voles in their natural habitat with nature photographer Paul Miguel.

Water voles are fascinating animals, but like many mammals they are difficult to observe - let alone photograph! This photography course takes place at a reliable water vole colony in Yorkshire, where patience and fieldcraft gives close views of one of the U.K.'s most endearing wildlife subjects. We start early in the day with a maximum number of two participants to mimimise disturbance. Tuition will be given including composition, exposure settings, ISO rating and focussing techniques. Water voles have excellent senses and will respond to sound and movement: therefore it is necessary to keep both to a minimum - and to keep a low profile. A distinctive 'plop' is a sure sign of a water vole and they also leave ripples in the water that help indicate their presence. When keeping very still, water voles can approach to within just a few feet, allowing them to be photographed with a focal length as small as 200mm!

The location is a large pond with natural surroundings that create beautiful reflections. The water voles often take the same routes when in the water and often feed on shoots at the edge of the pond. We'll also look at some of the signs they leave, such as feeding areas, droppings and various holes in the bank. Lunch will be taken at a nearby pub/cafe where we can view and discuss our images. There will also be time in the afternoon to explore a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve which is teeming with butterlies, insects and small mammals.

Further feedback will be given after the course via email.
