Spend three full days photographing British wildlife in spring with professional wildlife photographer Paul Miguel.
Limited to just four people, this all inclusive wildlife photography holiday takes you to the best wildlife locations in Yorkshire, North England. You will spend three days photographing British wildlife in the field, receiving expert tuition throughout. This photographic tour is designed to get you as close as possible to Yorkshire's wildlife; to improve your photographic technique and capture images of a professional standard. Two nights accommodation are included, along with breakfast, lunch and evening meals. There will also be time for post-processing of images and plenty of detailed feedback, therefore you will benefit greatly from bringing your own laptop; one will be available for use.
We will be staying at the impressive Solberge Hall Hotel. Set within nine acres, this beautiful Georgian mansion retains an English charm but with all the modern amenities that make for a relaxing stay. The hotel has free wi-fi access and an award winning resturant which uses fresh locally produced food. Nestled within tranquil English countryside, the Solberge is situated on the outskirts of the Yorkshire Dales, making it the perfect base for this U.K. wildlife tour.
The tour begins by photographing captive birds of prey at Birds of Prey Displays in North Yorkshire. We will photograph British species including goshawk, little owl, barn owl and long eared owl. Working with an expert falconer, each bird will be placed on a suitable perch with a natural background to create wild looking shots; one of the birds will also be chosen for flight photography. Photographing captive subjects is a good way to practise the skills needed when photographing birds in the wild such as composition and exposure control.
In selected dales of North Yorkshire, we photograph a range of upland birds including red grouse, curlew, lapwing, golden plover and oystercatcher, capturing classic shots of these distinctive birds within their natural habitat. The majority of photography will be done from a vehicle, giving incredibly close encounters from the roadside. After returning to their spring breeding grounds, red grouse and various waders begin to pair up, providing much activity from courtship displays to territorial disputes. This makes April one of the best months to photograph birds in the Yorkshire Dales. |
A full day will be spent photographing the wonderful bird life at Malhamdale. Above Malham Cove, wild peregrines can be photographed flying to and from their nest site; here we will be situated at the perfect location on the cove at the same level as the birds - giving the best opportunities to capture exciting flight shots. This is one of only a few places in the U.K. where it's possible to capture truly wild peregrines in this way. Around the limstone pavement, wheatears and meadow pipits also provide opportunities for bird photography as they perch on the many rocks and boulders. Back down in the valley, we will visit Gordale Beck, a reliable location for dippers and wagtails that frequent the stream - often providing very close views as they perch by the water's edge. The woodlands around Gordale are also home to summer visitors such as redstarts and flycatchers that return to England for the summer.
Half a day will be spent photographing the red deer at Studley Royal Deer Park near Ripon. The vast grounds at Studley along with mature trees provide excellent backdrops and very natural looking images of these majestic mammals. We will approach the deer on foot, concentrating where possible on the most photogenic individuals. We will also photograph both Fallow and Sika Deer.
